Abstract
964,997. Electron beam parametric amplifiers. ZENITH RADIO CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1961 [Dec. 6, 1960], No. 34855/61. Heading H1D. Amplifying apparatus, e.g. a parametric amplifier, for use with a signal energy translating circuit, comprises a non-magnetic envelope 20, an electron source 30, Fig. 2, for projecting an electron beam along a predetermined path 34 within the envelope, a lumpedcircuit resonant coupler 38, Fig. 3, including a pair of capacitive electrodes 40 and an inductive element 42, 43, 44 resonant therewith at the frequency of signal energy and disposed in the envelope along the beam path for transferring signal energy between the beam and the inductive element, and means having an inductive member 81, Fig. 8, external to the envelope and coupled to the signal energy translating circuit for inductively transferring the signal energy between the inductive element and the inductive member through the envelope. Tuning of the coupling structure 70 is achieved by rotating a control shaft 83 which changes the capacititative effect of electrode 84 or by rotating the whole structure 70 to adjust the mutual inductance between the coupled loops. The coupling structure may be used both for the input and output signals. A modulator expander 49, Fig. 5, is disposed between the input and output and consists of quadrupole electrodes 50 and inductive elements 52 so that the expander is tuned to the frequency of the applied pumping field. Flux shortening cylindrical shields with end plates 46, 47, 61, 62 are provided around the couplers and the modulator expanders, and have apertures for the passage of the beam and, e.g. as at 39, for accommodating the inductive elements. The entire assembly is supported within the envelope by four ceramic rods 64.
