Abstract

964,945. Igniting burners. RADIATION Ltd. July 11, 1963 [Sept. 24, 1962], No. 36156/62. Heading F4F. [Also in Division H2] The pilot jet u of a main burner a is ignited by sparks produced by a piezo-electric crystal generator when the gas tap b for the main burner is turned beyond a fully-on position. In the beyond fully-on position of the tap, gas is supplied to the pilot jet and pressure is applied to the crystals assembly of the generator by a cam j on the spindle d of the tap engaging a lever k which abuts one end of the crystal assembly. The other end of the crystal assembly abuts an adjusting screw p. The crystal assembly comprises steel plugs s, conducting rubber disc washers or thin aluminium discs t 1 , t 2 , two crystals o and steel pads t. The tap is returned from the beyond fully-on position to the fully-on position by a helical spring which has an end adapted to engage a fixed shoulder in the fully-on position. The tap may have push-in locking means at the off position and intermediate check points. The sparks jump between an insulated electrode and the pilot jet u. The latter comprises a pilot orifice and a subsidiary port. Pressure may be applied to the crystal unit by a pincer action of two levers operated by a double lobe cam.
