Abstract

Molten metal, e.g. steel, is degassed by teeming it from a container at atmospheric pressure into intercepting vessels in consecutive degassing chambers wherein the pressures decrease in the direction of flow and in which pouring gates into the chambers are of such cross-sectional areas that pressure equalization is prevented between the chambers by a throttle effect when the gates are not sealed by the stream of molten metal. Fig. 1 shows a two-chamber arrangement with degassing chambers 6 and 17 exhausted by the vacuum pumps 26 and 18 respectively, and with a container 1 from which the molten metal is teemed through the spout 5 into the first chamber 6 wherein the intercepting vessel may be arranged as a storage basin 7 which is tiltable, e.g. by a hydraulic actuator 9, on a pivot 10 located adjacent the pouring gate 27. Casting moulds 21 can be sealed against the bottom lip 20 of the chamber 17. The wall of the basin 7 may be surrounded by cooling means and the basin may be provided with an electric arc heater 12 for intermediately heating the metal charge.
