Abstract

Felted fibrous materials of the type of paper and cardboard comprise fibres of three different types, of which at least two are of polyvinyl alcohol. Polyvinyl alcohol fibres (acetalised or not) make up at least 40%, non-acetalized polyvinyl alcohol 5-50%, p and acetalized polyvinyl alcohol fibres or water-resistant natural or artificial or other synthetic fibres or fibres of more than one of these kinds 50-90% of the whole by weight. The water-resistant fibres may be of cellulose, polyamide or polyester, or of heat-treated and acetalized polyvinyl alcohol, and may have a coating of gelatine, sodium polyacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol or carboxymethylcellulose. Part of the unacetalized polyvinyl alcohol fibres may be heat-treated. In the examples, the fibres used are: (1) formalized heat-treated polyvinyl alcohol, heat-treated non-formalized polyvinyl alcohol and non-heat-treated non-formalized polyvinyl alcohol; (6) formalized heat-treated polyvinyl alcohol, non-heat-treated non-formalized polyvinyl alcohol and Kraft and (7) heat-treated non-formalized polyvinyl alcohol, non-heat-treated non-formalized polyvinyl alcohol and Kraft. The Specification also describes for purposes of comparison papers employing fibres of two types only (Examples 2-4), polyvinyl alcohol fibres of one type only (Examples 5 and 9), and only 10% of polyvinyl alcohol fibres (Example 8). Papers of the invention may be made by draining pulp on the machine by slightly inclining the draining table upwards while shaking it and operating at a suction speed that is not too high.
