Abstract

964,267. Measuring resistance of soil to piles. FOUNDATION ENGINEERING Ltd. Dec. 3, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No. 43470/61. Heading G1S. A method of determining the resistance of soil to a pile comprises making a bore in the soil to receive the pile, inserting therein a disc having a shallow recess on its underside which houses pressure developing means, e.g. expansible diaphragm chambers. A similar pressure developing means of larger cross-section, in fact with a cross-section the same as the pile is placed on the disc and the pile is driven into the bore until it contacts the upper pressure developing means. Then the pressure is increased in the lower pressure developing means and from the downward movement and the pressure the resistance of the soil to the base of the pile can be determined. During this measurement the pile remains stationary since due to its larger cross-section the force required to move the pile is greater than that to move the soil. The pressure in the upper pressure developing means is then increased and from the upward movement of the pile and the pressure the skin resistance of the soil can be calculated. However if the resistance at the base of the. pile is less than the skin resistance the pile does not move upwardly and the skin resistance is measured by placing the larger pressure developing device between two parts of the pile.
