Abstract

A glass composition consists essentially of, by weight, 32 to 37% TiO2, 30% to 49% of at least one of the oxides BaO and ZnO not less than 30% being BaO, 3.5 to 4.5 of at least one of the oxides CaO and MgO, 0 to 2.5% of at least one of the oxides Na2O, K2O and Li2O, and 12% to 21% of at least one of the oxides SiO2, Al2O3 and B2O3. Fluorides may be added to assist in fluxing the glass. Melting must be effected in an oxidizing atmosphere and nitrates, for example, are preferably added to the batch materials to provide extra oxygen. The Ba, Ca and Na may be added as carbonates. The compositions of the invention have high refractive indices and surface tensions which make them particularly suitable for forming reflective glass beads and flakes. Their properties are compared with two prior art compositions: (1) 32.6% TiO2, 55.8% BaO, 11.6% B2O3 and (2) 37.8% TiO2, 37.2% BaO, 19.7% B2O3, 5.1% ZnO, both in per cent by weight.
