A tension rod of adjustable length comprises a sleeve 1 having nuts 4, 5 with opposite-handed screw threads disposed in the ends, two threaded bolts 2, 3 located in the sleeve, at least one of which is a half nut or two half nuts and means for locking the half nut(s) into engagement with a bolt whereby, on release of the looking means, the half nuts fall out of engagement with the bolt which can then be moved axially in the sleeve. The two halves of a nut are attached to leaf springs 6, 7 which are secured to the sleeve 1 at their other ends, the springs tending to move the nut halves outwards. One form of locking device comprises an eccentric roller 9, mounted between ears 8 projecting from the leaf spring 7, which presses the ends of the springs and the half nuts together when its operating handle 11 is held, by a clamp 10, in the position shown. Another form of locking device dispenses with the leaf springs and has one half-nut only, pressed outwards by small coil springs, and an eccentric roller mounted between ears which project from the sleeve 1. When the eccentric roller is rotated by the handle 11 the springs move the half nuts out of engagement with the threads of the bolt, which may then be pushed inwards or outwards to give rough adjustment of the length of the tension rod. Fine adjustment is effected by rotating the sleeve 1.
