Abstract
A process for the manufacture of unsaturated aldehydes comprises reacting in a reactor a gaseous mixture comprising an olefin and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxygen-containing molybdenum compound at a temperature of at least 500 DEG F., periodically measuring the oxygen content of the effluent from the reactor, and regulating the amount of oxygen introduced into the reactor in accordance with the oxygen measurements so as to maintain the oxygen content in the reactor effluent above about 0.1 mole per cent. Preferably the olefin is propylene and the catalyst is bismuth phosphomolybdate or bismuth molybdate. A continuous oxygen analyser may be employed to analyse the reactor effluent and furnish signals to an automatic control valve to regulate the amount of oxygen introduced into the reactor. Specification 821,999 is referred to.ALSO:The catalytic oxidation of an olefin to an unsaturated aldehyde by oxygen at a temperature of at least 500 DEG F. is controlled by periodically measuring the oxygen content of the reactor effluent and regulating the amount of oxygen introduced into the reactor in accordance with the oxygen measurements so as to maintain the oxygen content in the reactor effluent above about 0,1 mole per cent. A continuous oxygen analyzer may be employed to analyze the reactor effluent and furnish signals to an automatic control valve to regulate the amount of oxgen introduced into the reactor. Specification 821,999 is referred to.
