Abstract

963,416. Curing filaments. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 22, 1962 [Nov. 10, 1961], No. 39911/62. Heading F4C. [Also in Division F2] Leakage of steam through an opening 43 for the passage of a thermoplastic filament or tow 17 in an end wall of the chamber 11 of an annealing apparatus is prevented by means of flexible vanes 37 secured to a pair of rolls 14, 15, the vanes on each roll being adapted to sealingly engage the end wall, i.e. at 39 or 40, and the vanes on the adjacent roll. A similar set of rolls is located at each end of the chamber and serve also to advance the filament through the chamber. The rolls are driven by an electric motor 26 through gearing 24, 25 and belt and pulley 28, 29, 33, 44. Steam leakage past the ends of the rolls is prevented by sealing gaskets 50 positioned between the ends of the Steam is supplied through a pipe 12 and a rolls and the ends of the arcuate recesses 39, 40. nozzle 16 and exhausted through a pipe 13.
