To allow of automatic limited downward adjustment only of the mouth part 1 pivoted at 3 on the fixed part 4 of the suction head of a dredger when upward pressure on the part 1 ceases there is provided between the parts 1, 4 at least one pawl and rack unit. The or each unit consists of an arm 12 pivoted at 13 to the part 1 and rotatably supporting a rod 15 to which are rigidly secured a pawl 10 for engaging a rack 8 secured to the part 4 and a bifurcated arm 18 engaging an abutment 19 on a block 17 having an elongated slot through which the rod 15 passes. The block 17 is secured to the piston rod 20 of an hydraulically actuated ram 20, 21.
