Abstract

963,149. Coating apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Oct. 6, 1960 [Oct. 8, 1959], No. 34232/60. Heading B2B. A machine for attaching insoles 48 to the bottoms of lasts L comprises a tool 30 movable from a position in which it picks up a quantity of thermo-responsive adhesive from a block 46 thereof, to a postion where it may apply the adhesive between the last L and the margin of an insole 48 supported thereon, means for supporting the block of solid adhesive 46 in the machine, means for heating a portion of the block 46, and an abutment 82 against which the margin of the insole may be pressed after application of the adhesive. The tool 30 is pivoted at 32 on one arm of a bell-crank lever 14 which is pivoted at 15 and connected by a link 20 to a treadle 22. The tool 30 carries a roller 76 which follows a cam-track 78 on a member 80 bolted to the frame of the machine, so that the tool 30 pivots as it moves from the position where its tip 44 contacts the adhesive 46 to that where it is inserted between the insole 48 and last L. The tool 30 is heated by an electric heater 36. The bottom of the block of solid adhesive 46, which is in the form of a hollow cylinder, is supported on a roller 64, and the cylinder is positioned between rollers 50, 52, and others not shown, and rotated by indexing means comprising a knurled roller 90 which is rotated by a ratchet wheel 88, operated by a pawl on a bar 98 which is reciprocated from the bell-crank 14 by a linkage comprising lever 104 and rod 110.
