Abstract

Spheroidal graphite-cast steel containing 1.0 -1.5% C and -cast iron containing 2.8-4.5% C is produced by first making the total C content of the raw material, e.g. steel scrap or pig iron, less than 4% and adding 0.5-4% C to the melt in the furnace, e.g. an arc furnace, with or without a basic slag, having a basicity of at least 1, e.g. limestone and fluorspar, thereby effecting intense deoxidation and desulphurization of the melt so that O and S contents thereof become less than 0.003% and 0.02% respectively, and then adding to the melt 0.2-7% Si either as elemental silicon or an alloy thereof, e.g. Fe-Si alloy, preferably a Si-base alloy containing up to 0.1% of SiO2 and/or 0.5-5% of Al; the Si addition may be made to the melt in a ladle after tapping at 1400-1700 DEG C. In order to decrease the oxygen content of the molten steel or iron in the first step, one or more of the alkali or alkaline earth metals, e.g. Na or Ca, Al, alloys thereof, and F-, Cl- or Co3- thereof may be added to the melt. In the case of Ca, the amount of Ca added is less than 0.25%. Conventional spheroidizing agents are referred to such as Mg, Ce, Ca, Sr, Li, Na, K, Te, Zn or alloys thereof.
