Abstract

962,937. Making return bends; forging. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 19, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 35640/62. Headings B3A and B3H. A method of making a return bend comprises forming a suitable length of tube having a diameter substantially greater than the required diameter or diameters of the leg portions of the return bend, reducing the diameter of the end parts of the tube and bending the length into the form of a return bend. A length of tube having a diameter 50% or more greater than the tubes to be connected to it is reduced asymmetrically at its ends and bent through 180 degrees by any known method. The bent tube is compressed between a pair of blocks 10 down to the diameter of the leg portion 18 and a pair of dies 12 slidable between the blocks engage the curved portion of the tube to reduce the radius of curvature, the distance between the legs and produce a rearwardly extending bulbous portion 16 which may be opened to a desired diameter to form a stub. A mandrel may be inserted through the wall of the bent pipe to facilitate the forming of the bulb and mandrels inserted in the legs during pressing. The faces of the blocks 10 may be inclined. The tube ends may be reduced asymmetrically or symmetrically after bending. Ribs 20, 20<SP>1</SP> may be formed externally along the legs of the finished bend by the displacement of the excess material during the reducing operation using grooved blocks and dies. The ribs of adjacent tubes may be welded together to form a continuous tube wall. The leg diameters may be different and the bulbous portion off-set so as to form a continuation of one of the legs. A tube having a thinner wall portion on one side than the other in which the thinner side is positioned on the inside of the bend may be used. During the forming operations the tube may be generally or locally heated.
