In an hydraulic pit prop comprising a pump 14, 16 for advancing the ram 2 by forcing liquid from a reservoir 6 in the ram through a valve 8 in the head thereof to a pressure chamber 12 the valve 8 constitutes a release valve operated by an hydraulic cylinder 28 having a piston 30 which can be displaced from outside the prop as by means of a lever or cam pivotable about a pin 46-displacement of liquid in the cylinder acting on control rods 38, 40, 42 to open said valve 8.
