Abstract
Penicillins of the formula: <FORM:0962025/C1/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, wherein R is a phenyl, substituted phenyl or alkyl group, are prepared by a process which comprises reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid with an acid azide of the formula: <FORM:0962025/C1/2> Examples describe the production of a -hydroxy-, a -hydroxy-o-methoxy-, p-chloro-a -hydroxy- and a , p-dihydroxy-benzyl penicillins from the corresponding mandelic acid azides. The azides of mandelic, o-methoxymandelic, p-chloromandelic and p-hydroxymandelic acids are prepared by reacting the corresponding acid hydrazides with sodium nitrite in dilute acid solution. The acid hydrazides are prepared by reacting the methyl esters of the acids with hydrazine hydrate. Specification 880,042 is referred to.
