Abstract

Graft copolymers are made by grafting a monomer mixture consisting of (a) 5 to 90% by weight of butadiene and (b) 95 to 10% by weight of vinyl pyridine, an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or acrylonitrile, or a mixture thereof on to a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer to form branches constituting from 10 to 50% by weight of the resulting graft copolymer. The grafting may be carried out in bulk, suspension, emulsion or solution with the aid of a catalyst or by means of ionizing radiation. The examples describe the grafting of mixtures of butadiene and ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and 2-vinyl pyridine or to aqueous emulsions of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer by means of gamma-rays or catalyst mixtures containing cumene hydroperoxide, an iron salt, glucose and sodium pyrophosphate. At the completion of the reaction a trinonylphenyl phosphite antioxidant may be added to the graft copolymer emulsion. Depending upon the amount of butadiene present the products may be stiff or flexible. The Specification describes also the gamma-ray induced polymerization of vinyl chloride or a mixture of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, the reaction being carried out in aqueous emulsion containing an emulsifier.
