Abstract

A distributed information system comprises information containing sites (8) connected to a network (2). A network user software agent (4) has means (24, 26, 28) for determining the value of the system in response to a proposed modification of the distribution of the information in the system. For instance, such a modification may comprise moving the information from one site (8) to another, storing a copy in a cache (30) or deleting a copy from the cache (30). The user (4) institutes the proposed modification if the value exceeds a threshold.
