Abstract

960,972. Gas-blast switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 4, 1962 [April 11, 1961], No. 12873/62. Heading H2B. A gas-blast circuit interrupter comprises an earthed tank 2, a pair of terminal bushings 5, 6, a support bushing 14, an arc interrupting assembly carried by one of the terminal bushings 6 and the support bushing 14, and an isolating switch 16 between the support bushing 14 and the other terminal bushing 5. In the arrangement shown, the interrupting assembly comprises a plurality of fixed nozzle contacts 55 and of movable contacts 52, the latter comprising circumferentially-disposed flexible contact fingers carried by rods 44 which are interconnected by a ladder-like structure (not shown). To open the interrupter, mechanism (not shown) connected to an operating rod 29, is released so that high pressure gas within the casing 74 and acting on a bellows 37 causes the opening movement of the movable contacts 52 and the isolating switch contact 18. As each movable contact 52 moves, a member 72 on the end of the rod 44 carrying the next contact 52 moves a lever 68 to open an exhaust blast valve 59, so that gas flows from the space 80 through the nozzle contact 55, a cooling screen and the valve 59 to the tank 2. After a predetermined opening travel of the contacts 52, each member 72 moves past the lever 68 so that each blast valve 59 is reclosed by its spring 62 to shut off the gas-blast. The movable contact 18 of the isolating switch then separates from the fixed contact 19. The arc-extinguishing gas may be sulphur-hexafluoride, the interrupter being of the dual pressure re-circulating gas-blast type.
