Abstract

Ammonium salts are obtained by the partial or complete evaporation of a liquor from a coal processing plant, the liquor having been acidified and then subjected to solvent extraction with an aliphatic, monohydric alcohol containing from four to six carbon atoms per molecule, or a mixture of such alcohols. Acids mentioned are hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric, and alcohols mentioned are n-butanol, n-pentanol and n-hexanol. Srecification 804,544 is referred to.ALSO:A process for the dephenolation of an aqueous phenolic effluent liquor from coal processing plant comprises acidifying the liquor, e.g. by adding hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acid, and subjecting the acidified liquor to solvent extraction with an aliphatic, monohydric alcohol containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms per molecule, or a mixture of such alcohols. Alcohols mentioned are n-butanol, n-pentanol and n-hexanol. The amount of acid added should be at least sufficient to neutralize free ammonia present. After the solvent extraction step, which may be carried out in a counter-current extraction unit, the liquor may be heated to remove residual solvent and then either partly or completely evaporated to obtain the ammonium salt present, or the liquor may be subjected to biochemical oxidation followed by boiling with lime as described in Specification 804,544. Three specific examples are described in which n-butanol is employed in amounts of 60% to 70% by volume of the volume of the liquor.
