Compounds of formula: - where X is halogen and Y is oxygen, sulphur or NH are added as anti-foggants to the silver halide emulsion layer, to an adjacent layer or to a processing bath, especially the developer. Specified compounds are 2-chloro- and 2-bromo-methylbenzimidazole, 2-chloromethyl-benzthiazole and. 2-bromo- and 2-iodo-methy benzoxazole.
