Abstract
Hexavalent chromium values are recovered from aqueous solutions by treating said solution with an organic phase containing a trisfatty quaternary ammonium compound. The organic phase is separated from the aqueous phase and then stripped of its chromium values using an aqueous stripping solution which may contain alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonia salts. Specified stripping agents are sodium nitrate or chloride, ammonium nitrates or chloride and calcium chloride. The organic phase in addition to the quarternary ammonium compound may include a diluent of kerosene or fuel oil, and a conditioner which may be a long chain aliphatic alcohol or phosphorus acid ester. The quaternary ammonium compound preferably contains an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms and 3 fatty groups which have 8-18 carbon atoms and may be the same or different. Quaternary ammonium compounds which are used may be chloride, sulphate, bisulphate, sulphite, bisulphite or nitrate, bisulphate being preferred. Liquid-liquid extraction in a continuous countercurrent unit is referred to.ALSO:In the recovery of hexavalent chromium values aqueous solutions are treated with an organic phase containing a trisfatty quaternary ammonium compound yielding a quaternary ammonium compound chromate. The quaternary ammonium compound has one alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms and three aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having 8-18 carbon atoms.
