Abstract

960,252. Bottle closing apparatus. G. BODMER. Nov. 30, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959], No. 41192/60. Heading B8T. A bottle cap 6, Fig. 4, having a surrounding metal ring 38, is secured to a bottle neck by compressing the ring 38 radially beneath a bulge 39 on the bottle neck. The cap is applied by a plunger device 2, Fig. 1, having a member 14 attached to a reciprocating plunger and carrying an outer sleeve 1 with a pin 10 therethrough which passes through slots 13 in the member 14 and slots 22, 29, in a spring-loaded sleeve 20 and plunger 28 carried by the member 14. A cap 6, which is inserted into member 1 through a radial slot 7, is pushed on to the bottle top, entering through opening 8, by the plunger 28. On further movement of the bottle upwards, the plunger 28 contacts the pin 10 so that the parts 28, 1 move upwards together with the bottle. When the upper surface of the plunger head contacts the sleeve 20, sectorshaped fingers 34 are moved upwards by sleeve 20 relative to a conical surface 17 on the member 14 and are forced inwards to compress the ring 38 on to the bottle neck at a position below the bulge 39. The cap may be of synthetic plastic. The plunger head 30 contacts the sleeve 20 through a spring-washer 31 which allows for variations in size of the bulge 39.
