Abstract

960,036. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. April 10, 1963 [April 12, 1962], No. 14125/62. Heading F2E. A spot-type single disc brake comprises a pair of friction shoes 21, 22, Fig. 2, mounted on backing plates 23, 24 which have at least one of their ends inclined for wedging engagement with similarly inclined faces 18, 19 in a support 17, Fig. 1, integral with a fixed reaction plate 13 lying to one side of the brake disc 10, a calliper 29 supported wholly upon and straddling the backing plates containing a single hydraulic servo 31 which, when energized, clamps the shoes to the disc, consequent movement of the backing plates 23, 24 circumferentially of the brake wedging their inclined end faces against the fixed inclined faces 18 &c. so that a self-servo effect is obtained. The calliper 29 is provided with studs &c. 32 for engagement with slots &c. 33 in the backing plates 23, 24, to provide its sole support upon the assembly, the arrangement being such as to allow the calliper limited circumferential movement. The shoes &c. 21, 22 are inserted between arms 15, 16, integral with the support 17 &c., and U-shaped brackets 25 are then turned inwards about their pivots 26 to hold the shoes in place, split pins 28 passed through holes in the brackets and arms locking the parts together. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the wedging surfaces at the two ends of the backing plates 23, 24 &c. are oppositely inclined, for self-energization of the brake in either direction of rotation. According to the Provisional Specification, the axis of the hydraulic servo may be inclined, or the calliper may move axially on fixed guides.
