Abstract
959,978. Making gas burners. BIRMING- HAM BURNER CO. Ltd. Dec. 20, 1960 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 32961/59. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] A gas burner is made by flattening the end of a metal tube so that opposite walls meet for a distance inwardly of the end of the tube to form a transverse joint 26, and by forming a transverse opening 32 in the joint to provide a jet orifice. The flattening process is carried out by a pair of press-actuated dies having stepped opposed operating faces. The inner end of the joint is then deformed by a chisel-like punch to give it a rounded or a knife-edged or a square formation. The opening 32 is then cut across the joint by a milling cutter, the depth of the opening being greater than the axial depth of the joint. The base 33 of the opening may be made horizontal or inclined. The burner tube is made of stainless steel or of mild steel with a chromium deposit.
