[Also in Division F4] An underground storage chamber 22, preferably for the storage of liquefied petroleum gas, is formed by producing in the earth one or more substantially horizontal, water impervious layers 18 of the earth by freezing or soil-stabilizing techniques, the layer or layers extending to a water-impervious, vertical continuous zone 20 which constitutes the side walls of the chamber when the soil between the layer or layers and the vertical zone is excavated. The horizontal layers are formed by sinking a boring tube 12 down to a required level and pumping either a fracturing fluid, a soilstabilizing media, or a refrigerant out of the tube according to the condition of the soil. The vertical zone is preferably created by the use of freezing tubes 10.
