958,636. Syringes. KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE GIST-EN SPIRITUSFABRIEK N.V. Feb. 21, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 6981/63. Heading A5R. A dispensing syringe for the delivery of a substance comprises a barrel 1 with a piston 2 movable therein, a piston-rod 3 arranged to move longitudinally with the piston 2 and provided with indentations or projections located on two lines which extend parallel to the longitudinal axis of rod 3 and are angularly spaced about the axis, the indentations or projections of one line being staggered with respect to those of the other line, and a restraining element 5 secured in the barrel 1 and having a resilience in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the barrel 1, the element 5 being co-operable with each indentation or projection to restrain the rod 3 and piston 2 against movement to deliver a substance from the barrel 1, the rod 3 being releasable from the engagement of an indentation or projection thereof by the restraining element 5 by rotation of the rod 3 about it longitudinal axis, and the rod 3 having a non- circular cross-section such that the element 5 is resiliently stressed by the rod 3 to a greater degree in the angular positions of the rod 3 between the restraining positions, in which the element engages the indentations or projections, than in the restraining positions. The rod 3 may be cruciform in cross-section, the indentations or projections being provided along the ends of at least two adjacent arms of the cross. The restraining element 5 may be a spring wire having two arms engaging opposite sides of the rod 3.
