Abstract
957,859. Regulating fluid flow. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1962 [Dec. 28, 1961], No. 47499/62. Heading G3H. Apparatus for producing pulses of fluid pressure at an outlet 22 and suitable for use in fluidoperated data processing equipment comprises a sheet 14 of metallic or plastic &c. material formed with a cutout section providing an inlet 20 leading through an orifice 26 to the outlet 22 and to a control chamber 24, and sandwiched between a pair of plain sheets one of which carries a supply tube 30. The fluid, which may be gas or liquid, passing through the orifice 26 normally discharges to the outlet 22 but in so doing induces a reduced pressure in the chamber 24 which causes the discharge to be deflected into the chamber 24 until the pressure therein has risen to an extent to allow the discharge to return to the outlet 22. The frequency of the pulses so produced in the outlet 22 is variable by adjustment of a piston 36 or of the amount of heat developed in a heating filament in the chamber 24. An auxiliary opening at right-angles to the discharge from the orifice 26 may be provided to assist the deflection of the fluid stream and to influence the frequency, and such opening may be connected to atmosphere, to a source of pressure or to a point in the outlet 22. The chamber 24 and piston 36 may be cylindrical. The number of inlets, outlets and control chambers may be varied.
