Abstract
957,247. Aerials; radar. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1963 [May 22, 1962], No. 19674/62. Headings H4A and H4D. An aerial system (Fig. 2) capable of producing two radiation patterns (Fig. 1) alternatively, one pattern L being highly directional, the other being less directional but having a dip N in the position shown, comprises a plurality of elements H fed from T1 through a directional coupler K and a further element (or elements) HC fed from T2 through the same coupler K. The elements H and HC may be Yagi arrays, monopoles, dipoles or as shown horns, the element HC comprising the central element of the system. The directional coupler K introduces a phase delay of 90 degrees in the coupled line and the lengths of the feeders FH differ from the length of the feeder FHC whereby when the system is supplied at T1 all the elements are fed in phase (producing the directional pattern) whereas when the system is supplied at T2 the elements H radiate in phase opposition to the element HC (producing the less directive pattern). The receiver (not shown) is arranged to reject pulses in which the strength from the non-directional transmission exceeds that from the directional transmission. The invention is applied to I.F.F. secondary radar I.F.F. or air traffic control systems in which an interrogator transmits pairs of pulses, one pulse of each pair being applied to T1 and the other to T2.
