Abstract
956,749. Rolled filaments. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 9, 1962, No. 38144/62. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions B8 and D1] Rolled filaments having an involute crosssection are made by passing a continuous, flat, flexible ribbon of less-than-fully oriented organic thermoplastic into a first guide means and removing it therefrom in such a manner that the direction of travel is deflected through an acute angle, passing the ribbon into a second guide means disposed approximately parallel to the first guide means and removing it therefrom in a direction of travel substantially parallel to and finitely displaced from the direction of travel of the ribbon entering the first guide means. The first and second guide means impart between them a torque to roll the ribbon laterally into a filament, while maintaining sufficient longitudinal tension on the ribbon to impart orientation to the filaments. The first and second guide means may comprise a first roller having at least one circumferential U-shaped groove and a second roller having at least one circumferential V-shaped groove having a curved apex. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a ribbon 10 (e.g. of a homopolymer or copolymer of vinylidene chloride) passes over comb or roll 11, via snubbing rolls 12 into a groove in roll 13. The ribbon then passes into a groove in roll 14 so located that the path of the ribbon is deflected (e.g. 7-14 degrees), and thence, via snubbing rolls 15 to collecting means 16. Snubbing rolls 15 are operated at higher peripheral speed than snubbing rolls 12. The resulting filament has a cross-section as shown in Fig. 2. A plurality of ribbons may be treated simultaneously when several grooves are provided in rolls 13 and 14. The ribbons or filaments may be heated during at least a part of the operation, e.g. by heating snubbing rolls 12, 15 or guide rolls 13, 14. In a further embodiment (not shown), the ribbon is rolled around a core of, e.g. fibreglass or polyethylene, to produce a composite filament (see Division B8)
