Abstract
956,536. Helicopters. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1962, No. 37059/62. Headings B7G and B7W. A helicopter has one or more sets of opposed blades 13, 14 which are fixed with respect to each other, each set being prevented from movement about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the set, each set being oscillatable about said longitudinal axis, and means being fixed to each blade transversely and rigidly thereto to comprise a control gyro. Drive shaft 24 has a sleeve 25 with a crosshead 26 connected by journalled brackets to rotor 12. Arms 18, 19 carrying positive pitch masses 20, 21, are fixed to bracket 33 on the centre of rotor 12, the arms extending at an angle of more than 90 degrees behind the trailing edge of each blade. Oscillations of rotor 12 about crosshead 26, are transmitted through linkages 51-56 and 61-66, Fig. 3, to arms 47, 48 on an outer bearing 45 of a swash plate 38 journalled at 39 to shaft 24 for universal movement, Fig. 4. Control forces are transmitted to the rotor by springs 40, 41. The masses 20, 21 bias the rotor to return the helicopter to level flight. In Fig. 6, not shown, two rotors are mounted at right angles to each other on the drive shaft, a further set of springs connect the second rotor to the swash plate.
