Abstract

956,511. Heat-insulation tubes. PARK SECTIONAL INSULATING CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 19, 1962], No. 6403/62. Heading F2P. [Also in Division B5] An insulating covering for pipes, containers, furnaces &c. comprises a layer of asbestos wool impregnated with a hardenable adhesive which forms an outer skin, and an inner layer of fibrous mineral material such as mineral, glass or slag wool or fibres bonded thereto by the adhesive which is coated on both faces of the inner layer. The adhesive may be aqueous sodium silicate solution or a thermosetting resin. The covering may be in the form of slabs but is preferably in the form of a semicylinder, or a cylinder cut almost through diametrically, leaving the asbestos layer on one side to act as a hinge. The semi-cylinder comprises the outer asbestos wool layer 1 and inner fibrous layer 2, and is made by superposing the fibrous layers the inner of which has been coated with the adhesive on both sides, wrapping the layers around a mandrel covered with mica 4 as a parting agent, securing them by end collars, and pressing the cylinder so formed, while rotating it on a pair of rollers rotating in the same direction, by means of an upper pressing roller. The product, which has a hard outer skin due to distribution of adhesive, is dried, the mandrel removed, and the cylinder sawn through wholly or partly as above. The asbestos wool layer may be pre -impregnated with adhesive. In a modification, the impregnated layers are placed in a mould, a former dusted with mica pressed against them, and the whole oven-dried.
