The two sashes 1, e.g. of wood and 3 e.g. of metal, are held together by a hook 8 movably mounted in the frame I in a housing 9 let into the frame, as by a pin 13 on the lower end riding in a slot 14 in a slidable plate 15 moved to and fro by a screw 16, Fig. 5, the hook 8 having a projection 11 so that the hook guided between opposite walls 18, 19 of the housing is lifted from the rail 7 by movement of the plate 15 to the left, Fig. 2, and the projection 11 pivots about the end of a lug 28 on the housing wall 18 and causes the hook 8 to move outside its operative range with respect to the rail 7 and opens the connection between the two sashes. The connection is closed by the reverse operation of the hook and movement of the plate 15 to the right. In an alternative embodiment the hook 8, Fig. 22 is lifted from contact with the rail by an eccentric in the form of a crankshaft 22 rotatably mounted in the housing 9, the upper and lower faces of the eccentric, when the hook is in the closed position, being flattened, are pressed upwardly against the lower edge of the hook by leaf springs suspended from pins 33 on the hook. The lower edge of the hook is located between the pivot edge 28 and the point of engagement therewith of the leaf springs so that during the pivoting movement of the hook the springs tend to bring it to the erect vertical position. The eccentric 22 is rotated by a lever 35. Plate 15 Fig. 5, may be replaced by a crank lever connected between the end of screw 16 and pin 13.
