Abstract

Di-alkyl phenols of formula: <FORM:0955886/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups containing not more than 5 carbon atoms in a straight chain, R3 is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, substituted alkyl carboxyl or carboxyalkyl and in which the piperazine ring may be substituted by alkyl groups containing not more than 5 carbon atoms in a straight chain may be prepared by reacting a dialkyl phenol with equimolecular quantities of formaldehyde and a piperazine substituted at one nitrogen atom only. Suitable phenols are 2,5-dimethyl, 2, 3-dimethyl. 3, 5-dimethyl, 2, 6-dimethyl, 3-methyl -5- ethyl, 2-methyl -5-isopropyl, 5-methyl -2- isopropyl and 3-methyl -6-ethyl. Suitable piperazines are N-methyl, N-ethyl, N-benzyl, N-(b )-hydroxyethyl, N-tolyl, N-phenyl, N-carboxyl, N-phenyl-2-methyl, N-phenyl-2-ethyl and N-phenyl -3 ethyl.
