Abstract

<PICT:0955069/C1/1> A vacuum-tight insulating body is made by filling a mould, in vacuo, with a homogeneous suspension of charged particles in a liquid which contains an electrolyte, and which constitutes not more than 20% by weight of the suspension. The liquid is then evaporated and the residual mass sintered. The method may be used for the production of insulating bodies for securing and locating electrical leads, components and parts thereof, and, as shown, for locating a heater 3 within a cathode 1, 2. The heater may be first coated with a thin insulating layer by cataphoresis, and is wetted by insertion in a suspension of charged, insulating particles in vacuo before being inserted in a similar suspension in molybdenum cathode body 1, 2, the body and/or the coil being vibrated initially. The insulating material may be aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide or beryllium oxide and the liquid may be water with a pyro-phosphate as electrolyte. Sintering may be effected at 1600 DEG C. in vacuo or in hydrogen. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 868,431.
