Abstract
<PICT:0954679/C3/1> Steel wire is continuously patented and treated by rotating and advancing the wire 1 helically over a rotary take-up block 12 into a furnace 14 containing burners, electrical heating coils or other heating means for heating the wire in excess of its critical temperature, e.g. 1700-1800 DEG F., then removing the wire from the furnace and rotating and advancing it helically over a similar block 16 which may be sprayed with water in ambient air, then quenching the wire by immersing it into a liquid cooling bath 19, e.g. containing water, cleaning the moving wire by directing abrasive particles against it in at least one cleaning chamber 22, e.g. containing a centrifugal wheel 24 the centre of which is fed with particles through means 25, winding the wire into a non-rotating helical coil on a stationary block 38, e.g. by means of a rotary sleeve 33 and winding arm 35 the speed of which may be controlled by a sensing device (not shown) connected to arm 29 on sheave 28, then coating the wire in chamber 40 by spraying its surface with a protective material, e.g. lime or borax, and drying the coating, e.g. by baking the coils in an oven 43 heated by electrical coils, burners, hot air or steam heated coils, prior to discharging the coil along bars 39 into a receptacle 44. The wire may be fed from a tilted rack 3 through a series of pinch-rollers 5 for tensioning prior to heating. Scale present on the wire surface is preferably removed prior to tensioning by running it first over sheaves then through a die block as in Fig. 3 (not shown). Specifications 906,785, 917,618, 918,748 and 954,678 are referred to.
