Abstract

A method of producing a mat of mineral fibres wherein mineral fibres are produced by attenuation from molten mineral and a binder is applied to the fibres by spraying the binder, while dispersed in a aqueous liquid medium, into a heated atmosphere and thence into contact with the attenuated fibres for effecting a bond between the fibres, is characterized by spraying into said atmosphere droplets of an aqueous liquid blend of an "A" stage resole with from 0.1 to 9 parts by weight of lignin per part of said resole, the droplets in the heated atmosphere becoming converted by loss of water vapour to a viscous adhesive blend of the resole and the lignin that adheres to the fibres and bonds them together where they are in contact relation, and thereafter heat curing the adhesive blend "in situ", as disposed and carried by the fibres, to effect a resin-forming reaction between the resole and the lignium. The atmosphere is preferably a steam containing atmosphere at a temperature above 212 DEG F. and preferably above 450 DEG F. The fibres are preferably glass fibres and the resole is preferably phenol aldehyde resin. The lignin may be alkali lignin preferably in the free acid form and the "A" stage resole and the alkali lignin in free acid form may be contained in an aqueous ammoniacal mutual solution that is sprayed into the atmosphere. The solids content of the solution initially sprayed into the heated atmosphere may be from about 3% to about 50% and the solids content of the binder that is applied to the mineral fibres may be from about 1% to about 15% by weight of the fibres.
