[Also in Divisions E2 and G1] The measuring scale 2 of a machine tool is protected by two films 5, 6 connected by a sliding clasp fastening and viewed by an optical device 4, movable with the machine 3 table in a shuttle 10. The shuttle has two closures at its ends one of which separates the connection of the foils upon displacement of the device 4 relative to the scale 2 while the other re-establishes the connection. The connection, preferably of plastic may be of toothed form or alternatively one foil may carry at least one groove along its entire length which fits a corresponding groove on the other foil. The foil 6 may overlap foil 5 to prevent entry of grease or oil.
