Abstract

- 954,170. Printing-machines. MIEHLE-GOSS-DEXTER INCORPORATED. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 16, 1962], No. 5147/63. Heading B6C. A printing press comprises a plate cylinder 15 mounted in the press frame for bodily angular, i.e. skewing, movement with respect to a cooperating offset cylinder 14, inking rollers 16, 17 and 18 and damping rollers 21 and 22 for the plate cylinder, control members 84 and 101 connected to the inking and damping rollers respectively and operable to maintain them in operative positions with respect to the plate cylinder, an eccentric bearing housing 36 adapted to be rotated to adjust the angular position of the cylinder 15 relative to the cylinder 14, and projections 89 and 106 on the housing to move the control members 84 and 101 and thereby the associated rollers in order to maintain them in their operative positions on adjustment of the plate cylinder. The housing 36 is rotated to skew the plate cylinder in order to register multicolour &c. impressions, Fig. 2 (not shown), by rotation of screws 56 and 58 by a hand wheel 61, Fig. 5, the screw 56 operating in an arm 56 integral with the housing. An indicating disc 64 is provided adjacent a scale 66. The projection 89 is partcylindrical and its axis 91 is located in a predetermined position relative to the axes 38 and 44 of the housing 36 and the cylinder 15 so that as the housing is rotated the projection moves the member 84 and thus the inking rollers 16, 17 and 18 through rods such as 79 and these rollers are maintained with their centres at a constant distance with respect to the plate cylinder. Each roller such as 17 is supported on a bracket 71 for swinging movement about the axis 72 of a vibrating inking roller, such as 19, and the pressure between these rollers may be adjusted by a screw 76. A rod 79 extends through a block 78 carried by the bracket 71 and engages a bore in a pivot pin 83 rotatably carried by the member 84. Rotation of the rod 79 adjusts the pressure between the roller 17 and the plate cylinder. The mechanism acts as though rigid links are provided between the centre of the plate cylinder and the centres of the inking rollers. The inking rollers may be tripped from the plate cylinder by moving a lever 92, Fig. 4, which moves the member 84 counterclockwise and pivots the brackets 71, 71<SP>1</SP> and 71<SP>11</SP> carrying the inking rollers. The control member 101 may be moved by a linkage 107, 111, and a lever 114 to trip the damping rollers independently of the inking rollers. The projection 106 which co-operates with the member 101 is concentric with the plate cylinder since the path of the said cylinder with respect to the damping rollers is straight. If necessary, the damping rollers may be arranged in a similar manner to the inking rollers. The pressure between the damping rollers 21 and 22 and their co-operating cylinder and rollers is adjustable in a manner similar to that described with respect to the inking rollers. A web 10 may be printed in multicolour on both sides by six presses according to the invention, Fig. 1, three presses being arranged on each side of the web. The adjustment mechanism is arranged for accessibility on the feed side of each press.
