Abstract

953,803. Deflecting propulsive gases. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Oct. 6, 1961 [Oct. 21, 1960], No. 36261/60. Heading B7G. A gas turbine jet engine having a longitudinal axis and including a compressor system, a combustor and a turbine system for driving the compressor system comprises gas ducting connected to receive the exhaust gas from the turbine system, an air duct connected to receive some of the air compressed in the compressor system, and a rotatable jet nozzle which is offset from the engine axis and connected to receive the exhaust gas from said gas ducting and the compressed air from the air duct, the nozzle having a rotational axis which is angled to the direction of discharge of the nozzle and to the engine axis and being rotatable so as to vary the direction of its discharge of the exhaust gas and air throughout an arcuate range of at least substantially 90 degrees. The jet pipe 12 and surrounding by-pass duct 11 terminate in a bearing assembly, shown in Fig. 4, supporting a rotatable nozzle 13, which is formed with inner and outer walls 14 and 15 forming extensions of the wall of jet pipe 12 and the outer wall 16 of the by-pass duct. Deflector vanes 17 are provided in the nozzle outlet and the wall of the jet pipe is connected to the nose portions of the vanes. Alternatively, the nozzle may not provide an annular continuation of the bypass duct. The bearing assembly for the nozzle is formed on the outside of walls 15 and 16. A flanged extension 24 of wall 15 is formed with a V-groove for balls 32 and with seatings for sealing rings 33, the balls and rings co-operating with a flanged extension 27, 31 of a member 21 secured at 22, 23 to wall 16 and by a bracket 29 to surrounding structure 20. Wall 14 is split at 33 to enable cooling air to flow into the outer part of the jet pipe and cooling air is fed also to the bearing assembly. The slits 33 may be dispensed with. A swinging link may connect the nozzle to surrounding structure to carry a portion of the nozzle loading during forward propulsion.
