The temperature of an element 10 inside a container is measured by a thermistor 13 which controls the frequency of an oscillator 14 whose output amplitude-modulates a carrier wave produced by a second oscillator 15, the modulated signal being fed to a piezo-crystal transducer 16 on the inside 12 of the container, mechanically coupled to a second piezo-crystal transducer 17 on the outside 11 of the container which reproduces the amplitude-modulated signal for measurement at 18, 19. Oscillator 14 may contain an ambient temperature sensing resistor whereby it responds to the temperature rise of element 10, A clockwork timer 20 may be provided to switch on the oscillators 14, 15 at predetermined times. A number of temperatures measuring units may be provided, using different carrier frequencies.
