Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: [(R11NHCnH2n)2NRR1]+ X-, where R is C1-4 alkyl, R1 is alkyl or aralkyl having up to 8 carbon atoms, R11 is the acyl radical of a normally liquid fatty acid having 13-23 carbon atoms, n is 2-4, and X- is an anion; and their production by reacting the fatty acid R11OH (or a natural source thereof) with a polyamine RN(CnH2nNH2)2, and quaternizing the resulting diamide with R 1X. Specified acids are oleic, ricinoleic and linoleic acids; specified natural sources of such acids are soybean, tall, olive, castor, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, hempseed, peanut, safflower, sesame and sunflower oil; specified polyamines are N,N-bis(aminopropyl) methylamine, N,N-bis(aminoethyl) butylamine and N,N-bis(aminobutyl) ethylamine; specified quaternating agents are dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate, methyl chloride, ethyl bromide, benzyl chloride and methyl p-toluenesulphonate. If the final products are darker than desired they may be bleached with hydrogen peroxide at 100 DEG C. The compounds of the invention are textile softening agents (see Division D1).ALSO:Textile softening concentrates comprise a compound of the formula [(R11NHCnH2n)2NRR1]+X-, where R is C1-4 alkyl, R1 is alkyl or aralkyl having up to 8 carbon atoms, R11 is the acyl radical of a normally liquid fatty acid having 13-23 carbon atoms, n is 2-4 and X- is an anion (see Division C2), together with from 5 to 55% by weight of said compound of a water-soluble glycol or polyglycol of molecular weight not greater than 300, an alkanol of up to 4 carbon atoms or a mixture of such an alkanol with water, the alkanol amounting to at least 50% by weight of the water-alkanol mixture. If a non-aqueous solvent is used the concentrates may be added to the aqueous bath in a water-soluble packet, e.g. one made of polyvinyl alcohol or carboxymethyl cellulose.
