Abstract

953,234. Skis. H. MARKER. July 19, 1961 [July 21, 1960], No. 26202/61. Heading A6D. A safety ski binding has two side cheeks bearing on the flanks of the sole and mounted to pivot about horizontal axes; and stand plate mounting the side cheeks, and corresponding in length at least to the forward part of the sole, which plate is mounted for lateral swivelling movement within a limited range about an axis which coincides approximately with the axis of the lower leg, guide means for and at least in front of the stand plate connected to the ski, the guide means preventing lifting and lateral tilting of the stand plate, an adjustable detent device which holds the stand plate in the middle position and frees it in excess of a predetermined turning moment, and locking elements which hold the side cheeks in their vertical position and free the cheek disposed in the direction of swinging movement when the stand plate swings laterally. The side cheeks 2 hinged to a stand plate 7 by pins 5 have angle pieces 18 engaging under adjustable holding plates 20 secured to the ski and mounted in recesses in the stand plate. Rollers 9 on the ski engage in lateral slots at one end of the stand plate and engage the edge of the other end of the stand plate. The plate is retained centrally by a spring urged detent member 14 mounted with one pair of the rollers in a housing 13. The detent member yieldably engages a notch 15 in the stand plate. When the pressure on one side of the ski exceeds a predetermined amount the detent member disengages the notch and the stand plate pivots and disengages a holding plate 20 allowing the cheek to hinge downwardly. A tension cable 1 extends around the welt of the heel of the boot on the ski. Numerous other embodiments of the invention are described. In one embodiment the stand plate is guided by end bars 25, 27 which engage an arcuate bar on the ski and a fixed holding plate respectively. Lateral pressure on the ski swivels the stand plate and disengages angle pieces 34 on the side cheeks from beneath the holding plate. In a further modification, the stand plate 39 pivotally connects with a member 42 pivoting on a base plate 45. A spring urged ball 49 yieldably connects the member 42 and base plate. Holding arms with adjustable setting members 54b pivoting on the side cheeks engage in a recess in the member 42. Spaced lugs on the base plate engage over one end of the stand plate and the other end engages in a bar 51 which may have a resilient member urging the stand plate towards the pivot. In the modification shown in Fig. 15, the stand plate 80 abuts pins 90 on a supporting member 85 the pins being movable in slots in the standplate. The supporting member 85 has a spring urged ball 88 yieldably engaging a member 83 mounted to pivot on a base plate 81. Holding arms 92 engage in a recess in the pivoting member 83. A device 93 on the member 85 overlaps check portions. The height of the pivoting member may be adjusted by a screw 82. A pivoting member 124, Fig. 26, retained on the ski by a bearing plate 126 carries a housing for the detent device linking the pivoting member and supporting member 118. Screws in the housing carry rollers for supporting the holding arms. In further embodiments claws are secured to vertical pivots and engage over the front ends of cheeks 2 or over pulleys on vertical shafts on the cheeks. The claws may be formed by end slots in a semi-circular plate secured to the pivoting member or may be pivoted to the supporting member in which case pins or pulleys on the ski retain the claw in engagement with the side cheeks when the detent is in latching position. A stand plate 169, Fig. 36, guided by end rails 170, 171 has a recess for a detent member, a spring on the ski, the spring having bent ends 176 engaging ribs 178 on the stand plate.
