A holder for telephone directories &c. comprises an aluminium drum 11 rotatably mounted on a steel rod 13 and a rod-like retaining member 28 having the inner end 28a pivotally engaged in an aperture 29 at one end of the drum and the outer end 28c detachably retained in an aperture 31 in the other end of the drum by a cap 32. The cap 32 is held to the drum by the screwed stem 34 of a handle 36 and is rotatable to bring a slot 39 opposite the end 28c of the member 28 for release thereof, for insertion of the member between the leaves of the directory. The end 28a is also releasable from the aperture 29. A stop 42 engages members 46 mounted in two of the apertures 29 to limit rotation of the drum and collars 19, 21 spot welded within the drum have flanges slidable on the rod 13 for axial movement of the drum which is limited by abutment of the collars with a pin 24 mounted in the rod 13. In modifications retaining members are equidistantly spaced around the drum to take a number of directories which counterbalance each other so that a stop 42 is not required, a rectangular recess is formed in the drum or a channel member is secured to the drum to receive the spines of single books. In further modifications a cylindrical member joining the flanges of the collars slides on the rod, the inner end of the retaining member is not releasable, and the cap has no flange, the outer end of the retaining member being inserted or removed by loosening of the screw holding the cap.
