Abstract

952,735. Drying systems. ALLMET (LEEDS) Ltd. July 26, 1960 [May 14, 1959], No. 16575/59. Heading F4G. Grain or like granular material is dried in a chamber 1, Fig. 1, by being traversed along a plurality of superposed perforated upper surfaces 2 of air chambers 3, 4, the grain or like falling by gravity in a curtain 10 from each surface to the next lower surface, hot air being supplied to the chambers 3 through openings 16a controlled by slides 17, and cold air being supplied to the chamber 4 through inlets 11. The grain is fed on to the highest surface 2 through a shoot 5 and is controlled by a feedplate 6 whereafter the grain is traversed along each surface by chain conveyers 9 to be finally delivered to a shoot 7 for discharge by an augur 8. The heated air is heated in a chamber by a fuel burner which is automatically controlled to set the temperature of the apparatus. A motor for driving the air compressor supplying the heating chamber also drives the discharge augur. Both the heated air and cold air are discharged by fans 12, 13, the air passing through the curtains 10 of grain. If desired, the air may be recirculated to the apparatus. Instead of the grain being traversed over stationary surfaces it may be carried on endless band perforated conveyers. In a modification in which only two levels are provided, the lower air chamber is divided into halves one of which is supplied with cold air and the other with hot air, the latter being nearest the falling curtain of grain.
