Abstract

In a continuous process for the manufacture of acrylic fibres, acrylonitrile is added to an aqueous solution comprising 50-60% by weight zinc chloride, together with another, different neutral vinyl monomer and, if desired, an acidic or basic monomer, so that the sum of the neutral monomer and the acidic or basic monomer is 8-12% of the total monomers, and the resulting solution is subjected to continuous solution-polymerization under super-atmospheric pressure to keep any foams out of the solution and spun at room temperature into a coagulating bath comprising aqueous zinc chloride of not more than 20% by weight concentration and the spun tow is then stretched at least 8 times the original length and heat-relaxed by at least 20%. Specified neutral monomers include methyl acrylate and acrylamide, basic monomers include N-vinyl 2-(b -hydroxyethyl)-imidazole, N-vinyl 4-(b -hydroxyethyl) - imidazole, N-vinyl -2- methyl -4- (b -hydroxyethyl)-imidazole, N-vinyl -4-(b -acetoxyethyl) - imidazole, N-vinyl -4-(b -acetoxyethyl) - imidazole, N-vinyl -4- (b -methoxyethyl) - imidazole, and N-vinyl -4- methyl - imidazole, and acidic monomers include vinyl sulphonic acid, acrylic acid, alkyl sulphonic acid, and styrene sulphonic acid, and their soluble metal salts. As polymerization medium there may be used a mixture of 50-60% by weight aqueous zinc chloride solution and sodium chloride, the same mixture, diluted with water to a zinc chloride concentration not exceeding 20% by weight, being used as the coagulating bath. Alternative polymerization media include mixtures of 50-60% aqueous zinc chloride with an alcohol or with acetic acid. Solution-polymerization may be effected under 1-5 atmospheres pressure, the apparatus being completely filled with the reaction mixture. Conventional catalysts are used for the polymerization e.g. persulphates and organic peroxides.
