Abstract

Unsaturated ketones of formula: <FORM:0951927/C2/1> are prepared by heating together an allyl acetoacetate of formula: <FORM:0951927/C2/2> and an aluminium compound of formula: <FORM:0951927/C2/3> where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups or hydrogen atoms, R3 and R6 are alkyl groups, R4 and R5 are alkyl or alkoxy groups and n is 1 or 2. The reaction may be carried out at 100 to 250 DEG C. in apparatus which allows a steady stream of carbon dioxide to be evolved and removed. In examples, 2-methylhept-2-en-6-one is prepared by heating 3-methylbut-1-enyl-3-acetoacetate and aluminium di-(isopropoxide) mono-(ethylacetoacetate) at 140 to 170 DEG C.; if desired in methylbutanol as reaction medium. In a comparative experiment the catalyst is omitted, Numerous other catalysts are specified, derived from acetylacetone, methyl acetoacetate, ethyl acetoacetate or ethyl malonate, and an alkoxide, preferably a methoxide, ethoxide, propoxide or butoxide. The aluminium compound may be prepared by reacting the corresponding aluminium trialkoxide with acetylacetone or alkyl acetoacetate or malonate.
