Abstract

951,620. Blasting cartridges. DOW CHEMICAL CO. May 18, 1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 17579/60. Heading F3A. A blasting charge comprises irregular grains of electron-conducting material, a substantial proportion of the grams being retained by a 20-mesh U.S. Standard sieve and their shapes being such that they form a system of cavities, when in a mass, which cavities contain the explosive material. Preferably the electronconducting material is a light metal such as aluminium and the explosive is an aqueous, ammoniacal, or an aqueous ammoniacal ammonium nitrate solution and/or dispersion. In an example 72% by weight of a liquid ammoniacal ammonium nitrate solution, formed from 69.8 parts ammonium nitrate, 23.8 parts liquid ammonia and 6.4 parts water, 14% by weight coarse magnesium chips and 14% coarse aluminium chips was placed in a polythene bag and detonated electrically using a shaped charge. The polythene bag may be replaced by a perforated canister, Fig. 3. An aluminium foil baffle, Fig. 5, may be incorporated in the charge. After placing the charge in a borehole, Fig. 1, the tamp of Fig. 9 may be placed above the charge. This tamp may be made of iron, lead, tin, nickel, manganese, chromium, magnesium or aluminium.
