Abstract

951,393. Trailer brakes. ATWOOD VACUUM MACHINE CO. Aug. 2, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961], No. 29674/62. Heading F2E. [Also in Division B7] A trailer brake actuator comprises a draught member 13, Fig. 1, for attachment to a trailer, a coupling member 8 provided with means 7 for coupling it to a towing vehicle and a device 23 for operating brakes on the wheels of the trailer. The two members 8, 13 are capable of limited relative movement with respect to one another substantially in the direction of towing and the brake operating device is actuated by such movement in a direction to shorten the effective length of the members. The device 23 is actuated through a linkage 15 having a mechanical advantage of less than one to one. As shown the brake operating device 23 is in the form of an hydraulic master cylinder comprising a spring-loaded piston 22 actuated by a piston rod 21 having a slotted extension 45. The two members 8, 13 are connected by pivoted links 14, 15 and a bolt 20 through the latter links moves in the slot 46 in the extension 45. The latter is also engaged by a pivoted lever 48 having a chain 52 attached to one end thereof for connection to the towing vehicle. If the trailer becomes uncoupled the chain will pivot the lever 48 to actuate the brakes. A pawl and ratchet are provided to keep the brakes applied until manually released. A shock absorber 39 having the same resistance to motion in both directions acts to delay, as well as slow, the application of the brakes. The trailer brakes, Fig. 4, are of the internal shoe-drum type comprising two shoes 30, 31 connected by the adjustable connection 32 and operated by a single piston-cylinder 27. Retraction springs 33, 34, 35 are provided. The braking produced in reverse motion is thus about 15% of that in the forward direction and automatic means for rendering the trailer brakes inoperative in reverse are dispensed with. U.S.A.
