A rotary moulding machine suitable for moulding sweetmeats comprises a first drum fitted with articulated blocks having semichambers adapted to co-operate with semichambers formed in the periphery of a locked ring, a ring die having pressing chambers coaxially arranged with a first set of plungers on the said drum and a second series of plungers mounted on a second drum, the first series of plungers being adapted to push preformed sweetmeats into the said chambers and to subsequently eject them, and gear means on the second drum adapted to rotate it. A filled caramel rope 8 is formed into separate units 8a in an apparatus which comprises two rotatable drums 1, 2 carrying therebetween rings 5, 11, and a number of blocks 6, articulated at 7, which are moved inwardly by cam means so that the rope 8 is preformed into units 8<SP>1</SP> over angles a and in the chambers 9 formed by the shaped parts 5a, 6a of the ring and the blocks. Each unit is then forced by a cam-actuated plunger 3 into a pressing chamber 10 in the ring 11, the joining web being severed by a cutting edge 14, and plunger 4 is then forced into the chamber 10 by cam means on its stem 15 to press the unit 8a, and the blocks 6 are opened out by cam means over the angle γ. Plunger 4 is then retracted and plunger 3 ejects the moulded caramel on to conveyer 17. In the preforming stage each block 6 is firmly closed by engaging its nose portion 6<SP>1</SP> in a groove 13.
