951,149. Toothed gearing; screw and nut mechanisms; gearing for stopping machinery. DRAYTON CONTROLS Ltd. Oct. 24, 1962 [Nov. 6, 1961], No. 39580/61. Headings F2L and F2Q. An axially movable worm 32 engaged by a toothed wheel 34 imparts linear motion to an actuating member by two relevant modes of combined working between the worm and the wheel. In one mode of working, the worm is rotated by a handwheel 36 and splined shaft 35, while the worm-wheel 34 is held by the irreversibility of a second worm 38, thus providing a screw-and-nut action of the worm to actuate a fluid valve. In the other mode of working the worm 38 is driven by an electric motor 37 to rotate the wheel 34 and provide a rack-and-pinion operation of the worm 32. The worm 38 is carried in axially movable bearings 41, 42 engaged by levers 47, 50 pivoted on the main casing and loaded by a spring 51. When the actuated member reaches either end of its travel the increased axial loading of the worm 38 causes either lever 47 or 50 to rock and open a relevant microswitch 53, 55 to stop the motor. In a second embodiment the worm 32 is driven by the motor and the worm 38 by the hand wheel; the worm 38 being swingably engageable with the worm wheel which is held by an electromagnetic brake in circuit with the motor. Limit switches are provided for the worm 32. The mechanism in its most simple form is described and shown in the Provisional Specification.
